about us

The Kolbeach stud was founded in 1998 by the Penalurick family of South Australia with the purchase of Syon Splendor (imp) from Eric Dudley of the Kirreway Stud. Splendor was to be used over mares that had been previously shown under saddle by their daughter Karine. Angelene Penalurick purchased the Wembley winning mare, Syon Sensation (imp) in 1994 who was shown for a season in the UK before being imported to Australia. She continued to be very successful under saddle in the Southern Hemisphere, winning National and Royal Show Championships.

By this time the Penalurick family had become very  interested in these beautiful ponies and over the next few years imported the yearling, Colbeach Solitaire, Talacharne Wedding Chorus, who had a very successful show career in the UK, winning at the Royal International and many other major shows and Necta Night Surprise, who had also been shown by the well known Thomas show team in Wales.

Karine then went to the UK to ride for a season on her own 14.2h mare, Syon Sheer Delight, who was also imported and shown here, winning Horse Of the Year and Royal Show Championships. The young mare, Broetifi Hot Gossip was also brought to Australia to compliment the already outstanding group of imported mares at Kolbeach.

At stud in the UK is the well known daughter of Holly Of Spring, Holly's Gem, who has two daughters at stud here at Kolbeach, Gemstone (imp) and Holly of Springtime (imp). Holly's Gem is continuing her breeding regime for Kolbeach.

The stud has also purchased successful saddle mares to make up a very well performed base of breeding stock, the oldest progeny now being two years old. In 1999 the stallion Camargue Tribute (imp) was leased from Mrs. Jennifer Williams of the famous Pendley Stud in the UK.

Initially Tribune was leased for the season, but has since been purchased to be a resident sire along with Syon Splendor (imp) and Fernleigh Fine Print, who was Champion Young Stock at the 1998 Melbourne Summer Royal.

This season we are showing Ainthorpe Grace Darling (imp) who has been doing really well, and in England we will be campaigning a 13.2hh mare from our own Holly's Gem who will be shown from Ron Thomas' stables. Our latest arrival, Oldcourt Balalaika will possibly appear at Canberra as her first Australian coat is well and truly on the way.

Kolbeach has a very good band of mares including Dresden Park Rene, Covers, Waverley Festivity, Country Classic, Quamby Park Chiquito, Fayremoon Picture, Tallyrand Showplace and Radnore Memories.

We were also delighted to buy from the LJS Dispersal sale the beautiful mares, Rotherwood Matinee, Sufton Wild Rose, Weston Antionio, Fleetwood Royal Whisper, Adenhall Royal Secret, Ainthorpe Grace Darling, Highmead Fancy Free, Fenwick Carmen and the great stallion, Fairley Tempest. We also bought  LJS  Rosemount,  the full brother, now gelded, to Blaircourt Crystal Rose.

We hope to breed successful saddle ponies based on mares with performance
